A Letter from the Director
Any animal shelter will honestly tell you that it is not their adoption fees that sustain them, it's the monthly donors that support them. Animal House has saved over 800 lives in its short time in operation. However, we cannot continue to do so without monthly pledged support.
One may not realize how much money it takes to run an animal shelter. Each month, Animal House pays thousands of dollars in rent ($1,864), utilities ($700), medical expenses ($3,000) and yes, TAXES ($1,600)!! Not to mention the other miscellaneous expenses that running a shelter incurs.
Our average total expenses are $8,000-$12,000 each month!! Believe us when we say we try to cut costs where we can. However, we transfer in 30-50 dogs in a month, never knowing what medical care each one requires. Additionally, when our adoption numbers fluctuate, so does our income.
Why am I telling you this? First and foremost, we are a non-profit organization. This means we have nothing to hide when it comes to how much our shelter earns and how much it spends. We serve the community and the support the welfare of its animals. It's so important to be able to count on monthly donations and know that our shelter will have that steady support.
Second, you may not have the chance to "walk a mile in our shoes". In order to understand the impact of what we do, I think that one must understand what it takes. It truly is amazing to me that over 4,000 visitors view our dogs each month. What if every one of these viewers were to donate just $10 each month? Animal House's survival would be assured. Throughout the day our dogs play together in large pens, spend time outside in the sun and fresh air day, and enjoy walks at the park next door.
